Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Starting from January 2025, Blackburn High School will transition from managed devices to a "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) policy. Managed devices will gradually be phased out by BYOD across secondary schools.
Note: Blackburn High School will continue to support all current
school-managed devices.
What is BYOD?
- BYOD, which stands for Bring Your Own Device, is a growing technological trend in both education and the corporate world.
- BYOD recognises that technology and choices about technology are very much personal.
- BYOD acknowledges technology in education means more than meeting specific curriculum requirements.
- BYOD is intended to provide students and families with the freedom to choose technology solutions that best fit their individual circumstances.
-
How does BYOD work at Blackburn High School?
- Blackburn High School recommends all students to bring their own fully charged computer to school.
- Blackburn High School provides recommendations for specific makes and models available for purchase through a third-party vendor (Learning with Technology - LWT), which can be delivered directly to your home. Alternatively, you have the option to purchase a laptop that meets the school's device specifications from any source you prefer. Information about recommended devices can be found on the Blackburn High School website.
- Students receive an induction session, as well as one-on-one sessions, to help them connect to Blackburn High School Wi-Fi, download applications, access school applications, and utilize printing services.
- The school does not manage, support, own, or warranty the device; it is your responsibility. However, the school will make every effort to support laptop issues to the best of its ability.
What does the school not advise?
- The school does not recommend the use of Chromebooks, Microsoft Surface devices, or tablets.
- The school does not provide support for laptops that have any Virtual Private Network (VPN) software installed.
Minimum Specifications for a BYOD Device: -
- At least Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen or above
- At least 8GB of memory 16GB (recommended)
- Internal Hard drive of at least 128GB of storage.
- Screen size must be above 12” and no more than 16” in size.
- All devices must be fully charged before the commencement of each school day.
- Protective cover and carry case.
- Run Windows 10 or Apple OSX (Not Windows 10s), Android, or iOS.
-
It is recommended that all BYOD devices include an appropriate warranty to cover their expected lifespan within the school. Insurance for accidental damage is also advised, with optional battery coverage if required.
Note: Lenovo now offers an ‘Education’ warranty, providing extensive protection, including unlimited repairs, coverage for accidental damage, spillage, and more, ensuring reliable support throughout the device's use in the school.
