Our program provides a rich, developmental musical experience for all Blackburn High School students in Years 7–12. The program is for students who have never played an instrument before, through to the accomplished musician. It provides a wide selection of specialist music tuition in string, brass, percussion, woodwind, piano and voice.
All students take music in Year 7 and Year 8, and from Years 9–12 the program is elective. It features subjects which allow students to specialise in music history, musicianship, composition, music technology and ensemble playing.
All three VCE Music subjects – Music Performance (Solo and Group), Music Style & Composition and Music Investigation – are offered. Blackburn High School consistently achieves some of the top VCE scores in music.
NEVR String Workshop
The annual NEVR String Workshop at Blackburn High School is an opportunity for young string players from primary and secondary schools to come together and learn from high-calibre conductors and teachers from the Department of Education and the wider music community.
Across the three intensive days of rehearsals, students develop their playing skills as they learn a range of new works and hopefully make new friends and connections in the process.
Another highlight on the North Eastern Victoria Region’s calendar is the annual NEVR Youth Concert in Hamer Hall. This concert features up to 800 students performing in massed combined ensembles including a string orchestra, symphony orchestra, choirs and concert bands.
Information relating to the annual event will distributed to school music coordinators early in Term 1 each year.
