Our state- of the art STEM Centre features fifteen science
laboratories and specialist technology classrooms, including
digital multimedia, robotics design, materials technology
and a 3D printing laboratory, all centred around a central
open-air courtyard. Inside these exceptional facilities, we
foster our students’ creative and critical thinking with a
school-wide STEM program of design thinking and problem solving and extra-curricular opportunities such as the STEM Club and Robotics Competitive Team.
Developing STEM knowledge and skills is critical to facing current and
future challenges, including living in a changing environment, effectively managing limited resources such as food and water, delivering improved health and wellbeing outcomes and ensuring the prosperity and development of our populations.
STEM learning emphasises project based and inquiry based learning approaches, which are used throughout the school’s curriculum. The school has a large 3D printing laboratory which is used across the learning areas. In the Year 9 Connections program students in particular undertake project based work to explore real life problems.
In 2024, the students in the robotic team developed an amazing robot working from January to March. Our robot could pick up the ‘note’, launch it into the ‘speaker’, and eventually climb onto the ‘stage’. The students gave up many lunchtimes and afterschool hours to build a working robot by mid-March.
Many of the team members (with their families) and Ms Emma Love, made their way up to Sydney for the Sothern Cross Regionals. After a long weekend, where the students had to overcome many issues, breakdowns and other problems, the Backburners qualified 32nd.
The team continued to meet during Term 2 - 2024, to refine and improve their robot before competing in the Melbourne Robotics Tournament, hosted at our school during the July school holidays.
With a tenacious work ethic and problem-solving over the three-day event, the team qualified 8th and was one of the ‘alliance’ leaders in the final tournament.
I can not express how proud we are of all team members especially the leadership group, in the way they approached this year’s competition and represented our school. We look forward to all future competions.
