Our program provides a rich, developmental musical experience for all Blackburn High School students in Years 7–12. The program is for students who have never played an instrument before, through to the accomplished musician. It provides a wide selection of specialist music tuition in string, brass, percussion, woodwind, piano and voice.
All students take music in Year 7 and Year 8, and from Years 9–12 the program is elective. It features subjects which allow students to specialise in music history, musicianship, composition, music technology and ensemble playing.
All three VCE Music subjects – Music Performance (Solo and Group), Music Style & Composition, and Music Investigation – are offered, which is rare. Blackburn High School consistently achieves some of the top VCE scores in music.
In 2025 Blackburn High School Senior Jazz Orchestra was invited to participate in the 30th Anniversary of the Essentially Ellington Competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. Our students became the first Australian band to be invited to this prestigious event.
For the 20 students involved (and staff) it was a life-changing experience that will stay with them forever.
Amongst all of this, they continued with soirées, lunchtime concerts and the general hubbub of one of the most exciting and vibrant music programs in the country.
