Blackburn High School’s Senior Stage Band and Symphonic Band were given a standing ovation when they performed recently in Washington, DC. The performances were part of an international tour which included being the star attraction at the Mid-West Clinic, the largest music conference for teachers in the world.

Never in the 70 year history of the Mid-West Clinic, which is attended by 17,000 teachers, has two ensembles from the one school been invited to perform. This accolade demonstrates the quality of performances and the music excellence at Blackburn High School.

The Australian Ambassador’s Office recently wrote to the school to commend the staff and students on an exceptional performance.

Blackburn High School Symphonic Band and Senior Jazz Orchestra will soon be demonstrating their finely honed skills as part of a tour to the United States or America.

They will travel for 16 days to Washington, New York and Chicago. Throughout the Tour, the ensembles will work with clinicians in each city including Victor Goines at Lincoln Centre Jazz and Colin Williams trombone with New York Philharmonic in New York and perform concerts with youth music organisations and high schools.

In Chicago both ensembles will perform at the Midwest Clinic an internationally acclaimed band and orchestra conference for music educators. Each year in excess of 17,000 music educators attend this conference. Each year the organizers invite outstanding student ensembles from around the world to perform. No school has ever had the distinction of an invitation for two ensembles to perform and no jazz band has ever been invited.

Except for Blackburn High School. This year Mid West Clinic extended an invitation to our Symphonic Band and Senior Jazz Orchestra to perform at the 2017 Clinic.

This is a first in the 70 year history of the Mid West Clinic.

The attendees are in for a real treat.

Eighteen budding Scientists from Years 9-11 attended the Australian L’Oréal UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Forum for Women in Science at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne. The purpose of this event was to connect young girls with a passion for science and provide them with the opportunity to hear about the Fellow’s scientific interests and the discoveries they have made, while also discussing the potential for future study or careers in science.

Each female scientist gave a short presentation of their research and spoke of their career pathway to date.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science initiative began in 1998 and since that time the L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) have strived to support and recognise accomplished women researchers, encourage more young women to enter the profession and to assist them as they progress their careers.

Globally the program has recognised more than 2250 women in 110 countries, honoured 94 International Laureates for excellence in science (including two women who went on to be awarded a Nobel Prize) and awarded over 2200

Our students keenly participated in question time and were inspired by the accomplished and exciting women they met.

Seven Blackburn High School entries have been selected for exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image as part of a joint Education Department and Adobe program called “Have a Voice”

Blackburn is the only school to have 7 entries selected. The maximum entries for a school was 5 entries.

Such was the quality of the student work the organizers took the extraordinary step of selecting 7 works for display.

The Education Department has also identified Staff members Pei- Yu Hsu and Tameka Carter as highly proficient and creative teachers who have demonstrated outstanding use of the Adobe program in innovative projects for their students. The calibre of their work will be the subject of a feature article in Education Department publications.

The aim of the Have a Voice program is to provide a platform for students to enhance their communication and creativity skills through having a voice about something that is important to them.

Students work in groups to produce either a video story, an animation, a website or web page or a poster about a topic or issue that is important to them.

For the second year in a row a Blackburn High School student has won the regional division of the Lions International Peace Poster Competition.

The Lions International Peace Poster Competition is one of many Lions Clubs International Youth Programs that aim to provide opportunities for self-development, education, contribution and achievement for young people. This year the theme was ‘The Future of Peace’

Three artworks by Blackburn High School students made the Finals. The students and their families attended the Regional Judging Night at the Whitehorse Civic Centre. It was a great night surrounded by many other talented students from a wide range of schools within the region.

We were delighted when Nathan’s poster was awarded First Place. His artwork will now go on to the District finals.

Congratulations Nathan.
