Co-Curricular
Our curriculum unites a challenging academic program with comprehensive and balanced education across all disciplines. Students are invited to join in our music, sports, camps and leadership programs and explore the wider learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
Instrumental Music
Our program provides a rich, developmental musical experience for all Blackburn High School students in Years 7–12. The program is for students who have never played an instrument before, through to the accomplished musician. It provides a wide selection of specialist music tuition in string, brass, percussion, woodwind, piano and voice.
All students take music in Year 7 and Year 8, and from Years 9–12 the program is elective. It features subjects which allow students to specialise in music history, musicianship, composition, music technology and ensemble playing.
All three VCE Music subjects – Music Performance (Solo and Group), Music Style & Composition and Music Investigation – are offered, which is rare. Blackburn High School consistently achieves some of the top VCE scores in music.

Sport, including Sports Leadership
The Sports Leadership elective at Year 10 is a multi-award winning program designed at Blackburn School by staff member Mr Mark Pasquali. This program and Mr Pasquali have received national recognition for learning excellence and innovation in this area. Students are introduced to the skills, values and practices of leadership through learning how to become a coach. Coaching requires considerable leadership acumen.
Students also engage in practical and theoretical study of Fitness, Energy Systems and Goal Setting Education.
Students study with specialists in areas such as; Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Sports Massage, Personal Training, Sports Medicine, Disability Sports and Exercise Science. Students attend excursions to the MCG, Etihad Stadium, Victorian Institute of Science and Exercise Research Australia.
The final learning experience for the students is a 3-day sailing camp where students apply their leadership skills in a situation where they have responsibility for others’ safety.

School For Student Leadership
Blackburn High School has been a long-time supporter of the Alpine School where Year 9 students, as an extension activity, have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in an outdoor environment, living away from home for up to a term. The Alpine School has evolved into a multi-campus School for Student Leadership in recent years.
The School for Student Leadership is an initiative of the Department of Education and Training, offering a unique residential education experience for Year 9 students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students’ home regions. Our commitment to the School for Student Leadership has seen many of our students invited to participate in their programs.

Camps
Taking learning and the curriculum outside the classroom is a core objective of our Camps and Tours program. The camps and tours are “classrooms outside the four walls”. They provide students with active learning through fun and rewarding personal challenges in different and often beautiful settings. The program helps students realise their potential in communication, decision making, problem solving, resilience, team building, working collaboratively and leadership.
Victorian School of Languages
The Victorian School of Languages has a campus at Blackburn High School and offers Languages Other Than English classes on Saturday mornings. Many Blackburn High School students take advantage of this facility.
